The Films of Jess Franco
+ Erwin C. Detrich

Apocalypsis Sexual: (198?) Uncut, uncensored (but soft-core) Jess Franco sleazefest about a group of pervo kidnappers who nab a rich babe and keep her captive while forcing her to engage in kinky sex acts and watch them shoot craps on a naked chick, etc. After a bit she gets to digin' it and convinces the main scumbag to kill the rest of 'em off so they can hump on their corpses. In Spanish, no subs. [18+]

Barbed Wire Dolls
Barbed Wire Dolls: (1975) Super sleazy Jess Franco classic that's wall-to-wall sex 'n sadism from start to finish. Ol' Jess never being one to allow plot to get in the way of really rude sleaze, this baby hums with bondage, torture, massive amounts of full frontal nudity, and yes, the much lauded scene in which a woman masturbates with a cigarette. Don't miss the hilarious slo-mo sequence that was shot at normal speed (in which Franco himself tries to commit incest). Definitely one of Franco's more entertaining outings. [B, 18+]

Bloody Moon
Bloody Moon: (1983) Jess Franco's "big" budget slasher pic with lots o' grue, nudity and really bad music. Mildly affected by plot about a teen party in which a killer stalks the revelers, highlights include a wicked ride on the ol' sawmill and a bit where a girl gets stabbed in the back and the knife-blade pops out of her breast. Only Franco... [B]

Bram Stoker's Count Dracula: (1970) Jess Franco claimed to be making the only faithful adaptation of Stoker's novel and did it with even less success than Coppola did when he made the same claim some years later. Of course, Franco has the kick-ass cast: Chris Lee stars as the count (endowed with a black handle-bar mustache), Klaus Kinsky as Renfield and Herbert Lom as Van Helsing. Can you beat that? Uncut print.

The Demons: (1972) Uncut, widescreen print of Jess Franco’s direct knock-off of Ken Russell’s The Devils that blends the lesbian nun and inquisition genres with extra helpings of full-frontal nudity from some nice lookin’ babes (for a change). When a horny nun turns to witchcraft the locals get all fired up and torch her at the stake. Top-notch Franco trash. [18+]

Island Women: (1976) Sleazy WiP yarn is actually one of the better women's prison flicks, directed by Jess Franco’s occasional partner in grime, Edwin C. Dietrich. When the dictator of a South American town decides he needs to hide his whores, his girlfriend decides to put them all on an island and run the place by the numbers outfitted in black leather. At one point she punishes the entire cast by making them live without their clothes. Nekked babes abound, and for once there are some good looking ones, including French porn star Bridgette Lahaie. Non-stop soft-core sex, full frontal nudity and close-ups of female orifices, so it's definitely [AO].

Lorna the Exorcist: (1974) Jess Franco’s notorious sex n’ Satan flick starring Lina Romay and a cast of nekkid chicks. As far as I can tell girls are being possessed and writhing around in the buff, having sex and showering until Lorna gets into some heavy lesbo sex and cures them. Contains the infamous scene in which spiders start crawling out of a naked babe’s gash. Virtually wall to wall nudity and soft-core sex in the Franco tradition. In French only, in pretty crappy quality but yet, not too bad considering the extreme rarity of this film. [B, 18+]

Love Camp: (1977) Jess Franco and Edwin C. Detrich’s companion piece to Island Women. About a South American revolutionary who decides that to keep his revolution going strong he needs a castle fulla naked chicks to service his men. As usual, all of the women sleep sans clothing and bedcovers and have way too much fun in the showers. Not a bad outing if full-frontal nudity, lingering crotch shots and really bad dubbing meet your criteria for cinematic nirvana. [18+]

Love Letters of a Portuguese Nun: (1977) Uncut print of Jess Franco's total rip-off of The Devils with rampant full-frontal nudity, lesbian nuns, blasphemy, bondage, etc about a young girl who is sent off to the convent by a horny priest who catches her frolicking with her boyfriend. Once in the convent, she finds out it's a proverbial den of iniquity with the priest always after her as are the rest of the girls. In English with Dutch subtitles. [18+]

Mansion of the Living Dead: (1982) Sleazy Jess Franco helmed rip-off of Amando de Ossorio's Tombs of the Blind Dead about a group of lesbians who take a trip to a remote resort that just happens to be right next to an ancient temple occupied by rotting monks who wear skeleton masks to hide their nasty, sore-encrusted faces. After much soft-core lesbo antics the girls traipse one by one into the temple and to meet their doom. In Spanish, no subs.

Sadist of Notre Dame: (1974) A.k.a. Demoniac. Uncut letterboxed (1.66:1) print of this Jess Franco classic of sorts. Franco, as usual, casts himself as a twisted, sexually repressed priest who digs watching chicks and stabbing them to death for their "sins." Shot back when Lina Romay actually looked good (instead of the female image of Ron Jeremy that she looks like these days), this sleazefest is loaded with soft-core sex, full-frontal nudity and mucho sadism (bondage, virgin sacrifices, etc). Ol’ Fanco looks like he’s gettin’ off on whuppin’ his old lady in front of the alter, too. In English with Dutch subtitles. [B, 18+]

SFX Retaliator
SFX Retaliator: (1987) A.k.a. The Heroin Deal. Linda Blair and Chris Michum star in Jess Franco’s action-packed, violent knock off of F/X. When a hapless movie effects expert (Michum) helps out a woman (Blair) running from the mob he gets more than he bargained for when the mob starts gunning for him, too. Fun, colossaly budgeted (for a Franco film) outing is plenty violent with lots of automatic weapons fire, pyrotechnics and chase scenes. Nifty box art, too. In English with Dutch subtitles. [B]

Tender and Perverse Emanuelle: (1973) Underrated, strange Jess Franco entry in the Emanuelle series that takes a giallo twist on the usual soft-core sex action. Emanuelle has married herself to a jealous lunatic who drives her to suicide, or was she murdered? Jack Taylor plays her shrink who doesn't seem to be the most stable person in the world (while roughly making out with Lena Romay he growls between clenched teeth: "You are the most adorable bitch I know!"). While the cops are busy suspecting everyone of being Emanuelle's killer, with their relationship to her told in steamy flashback, someone is stalking the suspects and eliminating them. Surprisingly well conceived stuff from Franco with plenty of gratuitous sex and nudity, as you would expect. In English with Dutch subtitles. [B, 18+]

Vampyros Lesbos: (1970) Widescreen, uncut print of Jess Franco's sleazy reworking of Stoker's Dracula. Sort of a clash between '60s art-house surrealism and '70s soft-core nudies, this version tells the tale largely without the male characters. A straight girl becomes mesmerized by a performer after her boyfriend takes her to see a live lesbian/vampire sex act. Later she comes to realize that this woman is in fact a blood-descendant of Dracula. For some reason she ends up in a loony-bin run by Dr. Seward (Dennis Price) who is obsessed with vampires. Much nudity, soft-core sex and a suitably sado-masochistic cameo by Franco add to the weird ambiance. In German with English subtitles, includes the original German theatrical trailer. [B, 18+]

Venus in Furs: (1969) Excellent Jess Franco psychedelic ghost story that manages to be very artistic and well-made and exploitational and sleazy at the same time. James Darren plays a musician who witnesses the death of a girl at the hands of three sados who torture and rape her at a party. Later he finds the dead girl washed up on a beach and then finds out that she has returned as an angel of death to get revenge on her killers. Also stars Dennis Price and Klaus Kinski, with Music by Manfred Mann. Ranks at the top of the Franco files along with Succubus as his best work. [18+]
