Burning Ambition: (1989) Frankie Chan's stylish, pulse-pounding Triad action flick about a mob family who's boss gets killed by men hired by an insider. When the boss' wife takes over everyone starts pointing fingers and the innocent second in command is framed. Mass carnage, great stunts, tightly choreographed fights with exceptional action sequences. Simon Yam has a small part. Widescreen in Chinese with English subtitles. [B] |

Crimson Bat - Oichi Wanted Dead or Alive: (1969) One of four films starring Yoko Matsuyama as a blind swordswoman who never looks for trouble, but always seems to find it. Basically a blatant rip-off of Shintaro Katsu's Zato Ichi films right down to the name of the character. Oichi helps a couple escape from an evil magistrate and ends up with a price on her head. This causes three of the best bounty hunters to chase after her to a small fishing village run by corrupt politicians who are just begging to eat Oichi's polished steel! Good story with plenty of sword action! In English with Greek subtitles. [B] |
The Good, the Bad and the Beauty: (1990) Violent Frankie Chan actioner starring a young Kent Chang (listed as "Ken Cheng" in the credits) as a cop who has to protect a pretty, young female witness who is to testify against the mob. Some incredible stunts and very bloody action sequences balance out the silly situational comedy that HK audiences love so much. Bill Tung also pops up, and participates in the action for a change, as Changs tough, smart father. In very good quality in Chinese with English subs. [B] |

Karate Wars: (1975?) Ultra-obscure Japanese fight flick about a Japanese karate master who is disgraced after killing a masked wrestler in a bar fight. To earn his good faith back, he decides to go to China and Thailand to challenge and defeat the martial arts masters there and prove the superiority of Japanese karate. Living only to fight and spurning the advances of his former girl-friend, he goes looking for trouble and gets it. Reasonably bloody and featuring what appear to be real fighters in lieu of actors, this one definitely has it's moments. In English with Greek subtitles. [B] |

A Man Called Tiger: (1973) Uncut version of this classic revenge flick from veteran HK director Lo Wei (who also has a cameo at the end of the film) starring Jimmy Wang Yu, who appeared in films that changed the face of HK cinema, at least until Bruce Lee came along. This was to be Lo Wei's third film with Lee, but after a falling out Wang Yu replaced him. Wang Yu plays a Chinese man who in order to seek out his father's murderer joins a Yakuza gang and is forced to kick the crap outta everyone in sight. Along the way, he seems to find everyone else's long lost father too. The last 30 minutes is all action with the famous ax-fight being the highlight. In English with Greek subtitles. [B] |

Operation Scorpio: (1992) A.k.a. The Scorpion King. David Lai, of Saviour of the Soul and Heaven and Earth: Tian Di fame, takes a turn at the comic-book genre with this cool if a bit silly kung fu opus that means business when it comes to cool fight scenes! A school boy dreams of being a kung fu master to avenge the oppressed, drawing comic art of his adventures instead of paying attention in school. When a local slavelord and brothel owner has his father crippled he must work in a noodle shop that is actually run by the greatest kung fu master around. Naturally he learns how to master the art and get revenge. The main draw here is the great cast in top-notch fight scenes, including the superb Liu Chia Liang (the General in Drunken Master II), Jean Pol (the tattooed killer in The Story of Ricky) and Jan Yuen who's scorpion stance (complete with leg held back over his head!) must be seen to be believed! Widescreen in Chinese with English subtitles. [B] |
Shogun Assassin: (1972/1980) Letterboxed print of this the American version of the first two extremely violent samurai epics (Sword of Vengeance and Baby Cart at the River Styx) with a mind-boggling body count and amazingly bloody swordplay. Sort of a Wild Bunch of samurai films. Spectacularly photographed and beautifully directed with geysers of red painting the walls, trees and whatever else is nearby. An absolute classic of Japanese cinema. [B, 18+] |

Stone Age Warriors: (1990) Awesome HK jungle action flick with vicious natives with an appetite for human flesh, the obligatory spiked trap, huge hungry Komodo dragons (!) and Fan Siu Wong from Story of Ricky who kicks major ass! Highly recommended, with excellent fight scenes, including a great one in a tree (it's far more impressive than it sounds). Directed by Stanley Tong among real aboriginal headhunters. Letterboxed in Chinese with English subtitles. |

The Warrior: (1985) Notoriously violent and hugely successful Indonesian martial-arts action film starring Barry Prima. A young warrior must save his land from oppression by a cruel and sadistic foreign dictator who tortures his captives. Sort of a historical sword and sorcery film with lots of bloodshed, gore and hilarious dubbed dialogue. Eyes are gouged out, limbs hacked off, bodies chopped in two, etc. Widescreen in English with Dutch subs. [B, 18+] |
The Warrior II: (1987) A.k.a. The Warrior against the Blind Swordsman. The Warrior (again played by Indonesian superstar Barry Prima) returns in this bigger sequel that once again pits our hero, now teamed up with a blind swordsman, against the villainous Dutch army and the evil sorcerers in their employ. This time out its and evil sorceress and a few disciples (who blow up when they die). Not as gory as the first, but fun all the same. Widescreen in English with Dutch subs. [B] |
